Planning Is Good

I have done next to no knitting since the Closing Ceremonies of the Olympics. I have been thinking a lot about knitting, though. Between reading and orientation stuff, I just haven't had the time. I have been working on my Summer Sweater KAL sweater, but the front is constructed so oddly that I'm not going to bother with a photo until it's finished. Should be next week, but we'll see how crazy things get.

The Ravellenic Games got me doing some knitting-related thinking and doing. I frogged a sweater and a hat that I don't wear and am in the process of deciding what the yarn will become and when. I need to weigh it all to determine for sure how much yarn I have and rummage through the stash bin to see if any more of it is hiding somewhere, but I think I have enough to make either another Rocky Coast or Tinder. Then I have to decide whether I'll make it for me or for my aunt, who has been in line to get a Christmas sweater for several years now. I made Rocky Coast for her last year, but the arms were too snug. Now that I know how to fix that....

Here is a terrible photo of the sweater before:

I'll work up a poll so you guys can help me decide, yeah? Would you think about it for me, please? I'd appreciate it. I have so many sweaters, that I probably don't need another, but I'd love to knit both of these for someone, if not me.

Here's a worse photo of an old sweater (look how short my hair is!):

And here's the story: I knit a few sweaters before someone taught me about gauge and a few more before I learned about sizing and measuring. That's why I frogged one and never wear this one. This is actually my first sweater (the first one I finished, anyway). I really, really love it, but I have no idea why I chose to knit it in brown (yes I do...Jared did). I've decided I don't care, this is the year I'm going to wear it! So I'm going to see if blocking it will get it a tiny bit bigger and then, instead of worrying about finding a zipper like I've been doing for 4 years, I'm just going to pick up and knit some button bands.

I have no idea when you'll see these things. They are just things I was thinking about and planning ahead for, which I don't do very often, but kind of enjoyed. :) What are you looking forward to knitting this fall?

    1. Thank you! I need that boost after second-guessing all my knits. :S

  2. I think that those finishing touches such as blocking and adding buttons will make it more wearable. But I really like it and if it were my sweater I probably wouldn't frog it, but then I love browns. The cabling is also so pretty and intricate! I'm tempted to queue this one.

    1. I hope so! I love it too. It's weird to wear brown when I'm...brown? But I'll make it work. :) It's a great sweater, I bet you'd love it!

  3. I love dreaming about future plans for yarn and patterns. It can gey me into a bit of trouble and I find myself with a lot of WIPs, but that way I have variety and I have things that I can take to knit night or to knit with as I watch podcasts. It doesn't make me nervous to have so many WIPs as long as I give each one some time.
    Happy knitting.

    1. Agreed! I'm cutting the WIPs down a little bit, but I realize I'll never get rid of ALL of them.

  4. I also have a couple of sweaters that I love but which never see the light of day for the same reasons. This is going to be their year, i think, even if they only get worn around the house. Thanks for the encouragement!

  5. i've been thinking about these things a lot, too, recently! i knit because i love love love to knit, but i don't always think about how the finished product might fit into the grander scheme of things. in the past, i've just giftedd things that that don't end up suiting me, but i'm starting to try to think about it a little more in advance. especially now that i'm starting to make bigger projects, that require more moneys for for material and much more time. i don't need a wardrobe full of gorgeous handknits that never see the light of day...

    1. Sometimes it's so hard to KNOW the grander scheme of things, but revisiting the closet definitely helps train that vision. You're thinking about it much more practically than I am, sounds like. :)

    2. correction: i'm TRYING to think about it more practically. that doesn't change the fact that right now i think cowls are the funnest thing to knit ever, and i've made like 4 this year... even though i certainly don't *need* any more cowls...
